Returning to class before a contract is approved

Did I hear correctly today that the union might ask the teachers to return to their classrooms before a contract is approved? If so, I wish to respectfully request that this possibility be re-thought. I may be the only one, but I didn't walk mile after mile to go back without the proverbial "handshake". Perhaps it's my "maturity" speaking, but I've been burned by too many promises that were not kept in the end. If this really is under consideration, please think again. ...

I have been very encouraged by the amount of positive encouragement that we are getting on the line. I haven't been counting but it sure feels like there have been more people honking, waving and giving the thumbs-up everyday. Lets hope that at least a few of those people are contacting the school board members.

no micromanagement

We are asking the district not to micromanage, and yet the BEA wants to do that with break times and sign in sheets. My school has responded much better to not signing out for breaks--taking breaks as they please--in fact, it seems like they are not even taking all their break time. We are adults and we are more willing do do more and to show up and do what's right when it's a choice rather than forced. We've had almost 100% attendance and people have been happy to participate.

Educational Research Supporting the Curriculum Web

I didn't realize until yesterday (from a member of the bargaining team) that the Curriculum Web has no known Educational Research to back its format or implementation restrictions. Do the parents & community know this? If I was a BSD parent, (which I was from 1996-2000), I'd be up at ESD demanding that the web be used only an "idea well" from which we use the end result, use ideas we feel will reach our students, and use our judgement and creativity on anything else. I thought ...

I was able to listen from about 8:00-present (9:30). I must say a greater percentage of those that spoke were "teacher-positive" during the time I watched. The loudest seemed to be "teacher-negative" (including calling out Steven & Michele for being "lazy" about negotiating), but it's clear almost all want the strike settled with contiuous negotiations (rather than taking Sundays off, etc.). There were a couple of well-placed torpedos aimed at the "acting" ...

Music is a pretty classic avenue for social struggles. I'm not aware of any songs specifically for educators, but there are certainly many others. First suggestion: "We Shall Overcome"

I'm a "senior" teacher at a school with LOTS of younger teachers who are in great shape! How can I tactfully suggest we're not going to a fire? I think some of the aches & pains would be assuaged if we kept a steady MODERATE pace. I'm willing and able to walk, but my body isn't able to run all day. Thanks. aslongasittakes

It would be helpful to have assigned picket hours with specific areas of marching to be most effective and best use of the time expended. Sign up or assigned....either way might conserve energy and time of the teachers involved. Thank you.
